University of Limoges
The University of Limoges entrusts 2 herbaria to its Service Commun à la Documentation (Documentation Joint Services), where they are kept and are retrievable on appointment.
The Charles Le Gendre Herbarium (1841-1935) : focusing on Limousin plants, the herbarium covered a large period extending from 1880 to 1930. Composed of various type of frame of different sizes, it is the work of a botanist and contains numerous samples (about 30,000). Charles Le Gendre is the founder of the Botanical Society of Limousin (1889), and the author of the Catalogue des plantes du Limousin (1914).
The Fray-Fournier Herbarium (1764-1835) : this herbarium was composed by an expert amateur during the revolutionary period and the Napoleonic wars, in which Jean-Baptiste Fray-Fournier was Surgeon Major and Commissioner of War. The samples, split into 140 bundles, come from south-west France, the Pyrenees (both French and Spanish), as well as Poland and Russia.
The work undertaken by the University of Limoges centers on sheets restoration, as well as the description and digitization of pieces, all of which are then registered in the Sonnerat database.
The choice made was to treat the Fray-Fournier Herbarium first. Each sheet was photographed. Pictures are archived in a high-resolution format (TIFF), and are retrievable in compressed format on Flik'r.
The Le Gendre Herbarium parts were restored, re-attached and then digitized as part of the e-ReColNat program N°14M52.
