Botanical gardens of Nancy area and University of Lorraine
The Jardins Botaniques du Grand Nancy (Nancy Area Botanical Gardens) are an institution of scientific and technical culture, co-managed by the University of Lorraine and the Métropole du Grand Nancy (The Urban Community of Greater Nancy). They are composed of two gardens: the Jean-Marie Pelt Botanical Garden (Villers-Lès-Nancy (54)), and the Haut Chitelet Altitude Garden (Xonrupt-Longemer (88)).
Mainly built up by the Science Faculty and the Pharmaceutics Faculty, the NCY Herbaria serve as evidence to all the scientific work made in Nancy, and perhaps also the Lorraine region, int the botanical field. Over 300,000 sheets of herbaria, dating from the 17th century to the present days, are preserved there.
Herbarium properties
- Assembly work for plants has been established since 1980. The samples are consistently assembled on neutral paper and fixed with gummed paper straps. More than 70% of the General herbarium, all the new collections, and some “small herbaria”, are assembled following this protocol.
- The room dedicated to the herbaria preservation was completely renovated in the early 2000s. Portable shelves enable to stock and facilitate access to the different collections. A ventilation system was also installed. Benchtops offer dedicated areas for collection consultation.
- The herbaria of Nancy were computerized in 2002, directly in the database of the Museum national d’Histoire naturelle of Paris (thanks to computer networks). The partnership with the Museum of Paris, represents the first national experience of building up the French herbaria computing network.
- • In 2013, the NCY herbaria candidates for the E-ReColNat project. After 2 computerization cycles, over 95 000 sheets can be freely looked up online (2019).
